What’s the Point of Celebrating?
By — Cari Sekendur
“But what am I supposed to wear?!” – Me (after winning a Webby Award).
After consulting stylish friends and trialing makeup with my mom and sister, this problem was solved. I called my look “maximalist pearls”.
As someone who is most often behind the scenes, walking the red carpet with tourists stopping to take iPhone pics was a new experience. It felt surreal to follow in the footsteps of legends like David Bowie, Prince, and this year’s icon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus—Elaine from Seinfeld!
One of the best parts was celebrating the win with our client, Chris Chavez of CITIUS Mag, over a team dinner at Anton’s. Our small team of creatives and a BIPOC founded media startup beat the NBA, ESPN, and the Dodgers for Best Sports Website. It’s no small feat and we got to celebrate the success of our fresh perspectives in our fields over mezcal negronis and the best bucatini in NYC.
Meeting the other winners was equally rewarding. The diversity and passion of this unique group blew me away. From an Iraqi filmmaker documenting the last cannibalistic tribe in Indonesia to a sound engineer exposing abuse in disability homes through a gripping podcast, the stories I heard and the people I met were nothing short of fascinating.
It was unlike any other event I’ve ever attended. It was a celebration of the power of pressing in deep to find what people care about from our helping CITIUS make track and field reporting more accessible and fun to giants like Kara Swisher receiving a lifetime achievement award for her legacy of straight-talking insights covering technology.
Celebrating our achievements is a way to reflect and take stock of where I want to go next, and I’m already excited for next time 🙂
